Sports in Umuofia is a big thing in there villages.  They don't just participate in village sports, but also in professional sports like the Olympics. In Umuofia they participate in wrestling, boxing, weightlifting, basketball, table tennis, taekwondo, and canoeing. Athletes complete a lot of years till they are ready for becoming professional. The most popular sport in Umuofia is wrestling.
Wrestling in Umuofia is popular in the villages. Wrestling brings honor to your village. A man named Okonkwo was well known throughout the villages. From one of the villagers in Okonkwo's village he said, "As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amanlinze the Cat." (Achebe 3) The villager also said, "Amalinze was a wily craftsman, but Okonkwo was as slippery as a fish in water. Every nerve and every muscle stood out on their arms, on their backs and their thighs, and one almost heard them stretching to breaking point. In the end Okonkwo threw the Cat." (Achebe 3) Amalinze the Cat was unbeaten for seven years. (Achebe 3) This shows that wrestling brings so much honor to your village. It is also fun to watch and cheer for your wrestler.
Shawn Bunch is a former Edinboro university wrestler. Shawn Bunch missed making the 2012 Olympics team. He won his first martial arts fight in November 30, 2012. In Umuofia they wrestle most of the time, but they also do taekwondo.
