How to Deal With Grief

Ways to Help Yourself

By Iriana Aranda, Photography and Layout Editor

Grieving is not something people like to do because to grieve, you have to lose another . There are five stages of grief; Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. "[These] tools to help us frame and identify what we may be feeling. But [these] are not stops on some linear timeline in grief." (Ross & Kessler, N.E). In Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo embarks on a journey through depression and acceptance after he murdered Ikemafuna. In the state of depression, Okonkwo "did not slept night. He tried not to think about Ikemafuna, but the more he tried the more [Okonkwo] thought about him "(Achebe, 63). As you read further, his grief begins to disipate and Okonkwo "[springs] to his feet, [hangs] his goatskin bag on his shoulder, and went to visit his friend "(Achebe 65). He learned to accept that he killed Ikemafuna and faced that he was gone.
